This series of large-scale drawings extends the artist’s exploration into the monstrous, grotesque and otherworldly. Here the element of time plays a vital role in the process and development of each drawing where past and present collide. Exploring each drawing’s potential, Pien collaborates with his past selves and the marks they’ve made: reconfiguring his own series of half completed drawings that have been created and collected over the past ten years, images are split, reconstructed and combined, deliberately causing the already grotesque and disembodied figures to further mutate and transform. These highly expressive works boldly negotiate time itself, allowing Pien to confront his own history of different mark-making techniques, gestures and concerns. This process of negotiation is ongoing and crucial, confronting order, chaos and everything in between. The new archeological works celebrate process, uncertainty and the imagination. The resulting images demand the viewer’s attention and defy any simple reading. There is no desire for closure.
