The suite of London Drawings was realized while Pien attended a 6-month residency in London, through the Canada Council for the Arts. These works represent the largest drawings he had made to that point in time. The extended stay had given the artist the opportunity to research images and concepts involving colonial perceptions and representations. The exposure had provided him with a greater understanding and appreciation of the complexities and implications of representation and self-representation. The London drawings present layers and layers of impossible bodies. The loosely constructed lines and seemingly nonchalant placement of colours further complicate their representation. In these fields of expressiveness and chaos the figures refute the possibility of being fixed and named.
