Shadow Play is part installation with video and part performance. This hybridized work reveals the artist’s continued fascination with light, shadow, movement and transformation. In this piece Pien incorporates his own body, manipulating lights, cutouts, ropes and simple props to create ghostly shadows and mysterious beams of light. The work suspends disbelief while everyday objects become animated entities. The outcome is a cinematic experience that is mesmerizing and approaches the other-worldly. Utilizing and overriding the tropes of shadow theatre, Pien achieves a poetic and seductive world that dissolves the boundary between reality and illusion. Both his body and the set transform as he moves through the installation, slipping seamlessly, between two-dimensional and three-dimension realms.
